Urban Farming in NYC

This month, we are celebrating Black Women’s History Month by honoring Karen Washington of New York City. Karen has worked tirelessly for decades, fighting for food justice by creating community gardens for underprivileged neighborhoods, particularly those of color. She educates on urban farming, created a weekly farmers market, opened public dialogue about African American farmers and how food (including the food system) and social justice are interrelated. Now retired, Washington co-founded Rise and Root Farm, which continues her fight for food justice outside of NYC limits.
